Sue Jones - Guilsfield ADS

Peter Mullings - Chirk Aqueduct

Peter arrived in Park Hall Camp in 1963 as a 15-year-old boy soldier. One of his very first character-building exercises was an abseil from Chirk Aqueduct.

Peter describes:

We had to make two descents before moving on to rock faces. The first was down a pillar and the second over the arch. It was one of these rites of passage. We were not attached to a safety rope and had a very uncomfortable carabiner and sling arrangement to enable braking.

Between lockdowns last November we had the help of a local qualified drone pilot. Every time you ask a former Oswestry boy about their time here, they say "Chirk Aqueduct". So this is on our website because many have never been back once we left two years later. (Some of us married local girls me included. I was fifteen and my wife 13 when we met!!

Sainburys Sonnet

David Andrews has written another book based in and around Oswestry. ‘Fifty Shapes in Green – Hills near Oswestry’

Apart from going out to exercise, David has been going to Sainsbury’s once a week to do the food shopping. The bright atmosphere there, the abundance of food and the positive attitude of the staff have all made him reflect on how fortunate we are, despite Covid, and this prompted him to write this sonnet encouraging people to be positive in the face of our current difficulties.
